Capernaum:
the interesting remains of an ancient synagogue, dating from the third or fourth century,
are the most conspicuous landmark in the city, once splendid but fallen into decay and
ruin with the irreversible damage done by earthquakes and warfare. It is almost possible
to believe, on rereading the verses from Matthew's Gospel, that Jesus' prophesy has been
exactly fulfilled. The synagogue, where we can admire the remains of the limestone walls,
the pilllars with their fine Corinthian capitals, and the decorated fragments of beams,
has no connection with the synagogue where Christ used to teach, nor the one built by the
centurion whose servant was miraculously healed. it is believed that this one was built in
the late imperial age, under the Emperor Julian. |
