"And
they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the
synagogue, and taught" (Mark 1st 21). The archaeological site of Capernaum is all
that is left of an ancient city once extremely prosperous and important, especially in the
period when Jesus was preaching. There are accounts of several miracles performed by Jesus
in that city, such as the resurrection of the daughter of the alderman of the synagogue:
"And he took the damsel by the hand, and said to her, Talitha cumi; which is, being
interpreted, Damsel I say unto thee, arise" (Mark, 5th 1-10); the healing of
the centurion's servant (Luke 7th 1-10), and the chasing out of an unclean spirit
from a man in the synagogue (Mark 1st 23-26). |
