| Church of St.
Joseph: This sacred building is substantially modern in appearance. The architectural
features of the outside of the church, known also as the Church of the Holy Family imitate
the Romanesque style. The present church, which belongs to the Franciscans, is the result
of the reconstruction, during thr first quarter of our century, of a thirteenth century
building. The fact that this older church was built over other ancient buildings which
have revealed vestiges of baths and grottoes and the remains of further, even more ancient
constructions, has given weight to the supposition that the carpentry workshop of Joseph
was situated there. However, the convent of the Dames de Nazareth and that of St. Gabriel
also claim to have the site of the workshop of Jesus' putative father; this is only one
example of the numerous disputes over the exact location of the Gospel places in the Holy
Land |
